Polar and Non-Polar

We continue our plant extraction for today. Since everybody knew what they were doing and, which methods suit their plant the best, tasks have became easier and quicker. Around 1 pm, all the plants materials are successfully blended and ground and are prepared for soaking with solvents (hexane, ethyl acetate, ethanol)

Initially, we planned to soak all our plant materials then only we will go for lunch. However, things always never go as smooth as we have planned. First, we tried with Ethyl Acetate. Once the solvent are poured, we need to stir the content to make sure they are well-mixed. The stirring seemed hard. For mine, almost half of the plant material completely dissolved in the solvent and you can observe 2 layers.

Second, we continued with Hexane. For my plant, it does not dissolve in Hexane at all no matter how hard i stirred it. A very obvious 2 layers of solution s can be seen. You can imagine mixing some plasticine with water in a conical flask. This is how my plant looks like. Mine same with Jason's i think. Ben's and Yan's plant materials seemed dissolved well in Hexane.

We started soaking our plants with Ethanol in a much delayed time. Thanks to the unable-to-uncapped Ethanol drum. No matter how hard we twisted, turned and pried the cap, it won't budge. I was so desperate to soak my plant that i was daring enough to exchange the ethanol with another drum without informing the lab officer. Luckily Ms Teo was there and she forbade me to do so saying that she has no rights to do that and if i did, i might cause a "Big Buddha Head" lol. By the time we want to soak with Ethanol, it was already 3pm and yet we haven't had our lunch. Honestly, I was extremely hungry and don't really got any ATP left to walk up and down to find the lab officer. Yet, I still got the energy left to become moody. Lol.

Finally, I have requested to have our 3pm-lunch first, and then only we continued to soak with Ethanol. Finally surrendered. =.=. Besides, the lab officer was so busy to serve all of us lol. We went to eat in one of the restaurant in New Town, Kampar. Most of the shops are closed but fortunately we managed to find a restaurant that is having 10% promotion and the food is served in a large portion. So, it's reasonable la. Hahahaha.

Once, taken our lunch, we continued to soak our plant with ethanol. Luckily, the lab officer helped us to pry the cap with screwdriver and the cap still remained in a good condition. Me, being overly excited with ethanol and have accidentally over pumped the solvent and caused some of them over spilled on our bench work. Some remnants that we didn't notice during the cleaning, has caused a big spot of discolored on top of the metal cabinet. =.=

We ended our work today by cleaning all the newly requested schott bottles and other glasswares and sent them for autoclaving before we went home.
